Wassail at The Blue Market on Sat 11 March 2023
Blue Bermondsey Bid is excited to announce that The Blue Market in Bermondsey will be hosting a special event on Saturday 11th March. The event is called Wassail and it’s an ancient tradition that celebrates the arrival of spring and blesses the apple and pear trees so that they bear fruit.
The festivities will begin at 3 pm with crown and garland making at the market. This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to get creative and make their own crowns and garlands using a variety of materials. Mulled cider and non-alcoholic fruit punch will be available to enjoy while you get creative.
As the day progresses, a special guest will arrive to join in the fun and make the day even more memorable. From 5 pm, there will be a lantern procession to Rouel Orchard, where the Wassailing will take place. This is a chance to get the whole family involved and have some fun.
Participants are encouraged to bring along something to wake up the spirits of the trees, such as a pot and wooden spoon, a drum, bells, or a horn.
If you have visited The Blue Market for a while, come and check out the new clocktower, the Hannah Orchard new walkway and the traders in the market.
We hope that you’ll come along and join in the fun at the Wassail event on Saturday 11th March. It’s a wonderful way to learn about an ancient tradition and to celebrate the start of spring with your family and friends.
