A Full Weekend of Festive Events ‘Down the Blue’
To herald in the festive period and bring more footfall to the High St, The contribution of Blue Bermondsey BID member businesses, with additional funding from Southwark Council, made possible three community events, which were successful in attracting over a thousand visitors.
The action begun on Friday 29th November with the inaugural illuminate Bermondsey Lantern Parade. Families and friends came along and made their own lanterns at a free workshop with artist Frog Morris, and joined the established Illuminate Rotherhithe procession to display their creations through the local streets, ending with communal gathering at St James’ churchyard.
The next day saw another first, with the Blue Latino Market, a new monthly event bringing Latin foods, crafts and culture from around South and Central America to the heart of Bermondsey. It was an inspiring occasion which enabled our diverse local communities to be involved, participate, and collaborate together.
On Sunday 1st of December it was the turn of Blue Christmas, now an established annual community event which featured a variety of things to do for everyone, whether young or old. Visitors were invited to ride the Rodeo Reindeer and immerse themselves in the giant Snow globe alongside Circus workshops, Stilt-walking, Face painting, Juggling and good old fashion Hula-Hooping. And of course, a traditional Santas Grotto for the little ones.
The event also included ‘Make It Blue’, the new monthly craft market, providing a platform for local makers and crafters to sell their original gifts and products. Entertainment was provided by the girls of Carragher Academy of Irish Dancing, and local DJ Kevin Sage, keeping the vibe going with, sing along Christmas favourites.
